Test Code 68 Parasite Exam, Blood includes Malaria, Babesia and Microfilaria

Specimen Containers and Fixatives

Contact Microbiology lab at 570-2733 for instructions on preparation of blood smears. Draw 5.0 mL of whole blood in a Lavender Top Tube (EDTA).

Specimen Required

All locations: 3 thin and 3 thick blood films from a finger stick and 5.0 mL of blood at room temperature.

Client Special Instructions

Specimens should be collected before treatment is initiated. Microfilariae exhibit a marked periodicity depending on the species involved. If a filarial infection is suspcted the optimal collection time for demonstrating microfilariae is:

Loa loa – 10 AM to 2 PM

Brugia or Wuchereria – at night, after 8PM

Mansonella – any time

Onchocerca – any time
