LDH is an enzyme found in a variety of tissues including liver, skeletal and cardiac muscle, platelets, placenta, lungs and red blood cells. Due to its wide spread tissue distribution additional diagnostic information is required to interpret an elevated level. Due to high LDH levels in red blood cells, hemolyzed samples give falsely elevated values.
